Balancing a Career as a Caregiver

Stepping up as a caregiver is a big responsibility and can take a lot out of you. Caring for your aging parent while balancing a full-time job is even more challenging. When you are stretched to your max trying to balance work and providing care for your parent, things may seem never ending. Here are some ways to make life easier for you as well as your aging parent so that neither obligation becomes neglected.

Take advantage of the Family Medical Leave Act

If you are a full-time employee working for a business of 50 or more employees, you are entitled to 12 weeks a year of unpaid leave for family caregiving. Taking the 12 weeks to care for your parent and family will make life easier on everyone involved. Speak with the human resources department at your place of work to see if you are eligible.

Ask about a flexible work schedule

Transitioning from full-time to part-time may not be feasible for your current situation, but many employers offer flexible work schedules. If you need Fridays off to take long weekends to care for your parent, talk with your manager about working longer the other four days of the week.

Ask about an employee assistance program

Some employers offer an employee assistance program that can help when caregiving begins to affect your work performance. Speak with your human resources department to see what kind of benefits they can offer you.

Caregivers encounter the challenge of working full-time while providing the best care for their parent every day. Just remember, caring for an aging parent can be stressful but you are not alone.
