The Death Experience: Part One

Thursday, June 23 | 12 – 1:00 p.m.

Understanding comes from knowing and the diagnosis of a progressive or terminal illness can create a crisis for patients and families. This 2 part webinar will explore the physical, emotional and spiritual impact on patients and family members from earlier stages of illness up through death and bereavement. Palliative Care and Hospice experts will share their knowledge along the husband of a patient who served as a caregiver through the time of his wife’s death.

Part 1 will focus on issues of treatment decisions, shifting of roles within the family, along with the physical changes and emotional and spiritual challenges that many patients and families experience.

Learning Objectives

• Learn about common responses to receiving a diagnosis of a progressive or terminal illness on the patient and on the family.
• Learn about the physical, emotional and spiritual changes take place as a patient’s condition declines.
• Learn from the spouse of a patient about the impact of being a caregiver and husband for a terminally ill family member.

Meet Our Panelists

Whitney Blalock,LCSW, MSW is a home care social worker for AuthoraCare Collective. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and holds a Master of Social Work from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Whitney has been with the agency for over two years, and has worked with both hospice care and palliative care services. She has a passion for healthcare and values the interdisciplinary team model.

 

 


Stan Massey offers 40 years of brand improvement and marketing expertise. For the past 20 years, Stan has been developing effective communication strategies and attention-grabbing campaigns to successfully build brands for providers of post-acute senior care. Guided by research, Stan skillfully crafts strategic marketing plans and messages that speak to their target audiences and yield exceptional results – helping to increase referrals, elevate quality, improve the patient/family experience and ultimately boost revenue. Stan has worked on improving internal communications as well as creating marketing strategies and campaigns for more than 50 senior care providers.

 


Misty McAden, MDiv, MA is currently a hospice chaplain with Authoracare Collective. She has been providing spiritual and emotional support to hospice patients and their families for over 8 years. She has a Master of Divinity degree from Carolina Graduate School of Divinity, and she is an ordained (recorded) Quaker minister. Along with providing support to those facing life-limiting illnesses, she is experienced in leading grief support groups, grief workshops, and providing individualized grief counseling.

 

 


Allison Raber, RN, CHPN is a Registered Nurse certified in Hospice and Palliative Care Nursing. She has been with AuthoraCare Collective for nearly five years with experience in multiple roles including on-call and currently home care case management. She always listens and meets the patient, family and caregivers where they are, providing compassionate care, guidance, education and support throughout their journey. She helps the family to anticipate and understand end-of-life changes and provides them with the knowledge and training to best care for their loved one during this difficult time in their life.

 


Victoria Thompson, RN, BSN is a Greensboro Native who joined AuthoraCare Hospice in 2018. Caring for patients at the most vulnerable time of their life is her passion. Victoria received her BSN at UNCG.

Meet Our Moderator

Risa Hanau, LCSW is the Clinical and Community Educator at AuthoraCare Collective. Risa is a seasoned presenter and teacher in the area of end-of-life and ethics. She is a member of the Cone Health Ethics Committee. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker by training and holds a Master of Social Work from The University of Pennsylvania.
