Understanding comes from knowing. The healthcare system can be very complicated and hard to navigate for patients and caregivers during the time of serious illness. Patient and caregivers do not always feel understood and respected, or that communication is what is needed. Methods to gather needed information from health care providers, clarify goals of care and available community resources will be discussed.

Meet Our Panelists
Mary Larach has gained extensive experience caring for patients through her 30 plus year career as a nurse in a variety of care settings and levels of nursing. She received her Licensed Practical Nurse license from St Mary’s Hospital in Philadelphia and her Associate Nursing Degree from Philadelphia Community College. After completing her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at UNC-Greensboro she continued on to receive her Advanced Practice Degree as an Adult/Geriatric NP. She completed a Post Masters Certificate in Psych-Mental Health Nursing at UNC-Chapel Hill. She is a certified Psychiatric-Mental Health and Hospice and Palliative Medicine Nurse Practitioner. Mary has integrated Palliative Medicine concepts of holistic patient care into a variety of practice settings over the years. Since 2008, she has been a valued and much respected member of Cone Health Palliative Care Services, currently serving as lead advance practice provider. She continues to serve on the Cone Health Ethics Committee. Mary loves to travel and spend time with her family and enjoys reading, participating in several book clubs.
Merrill Syler, RN, BSN, MHA is the Vice President of Quality and Compliance at AuthoraCare Collective. Her passion for providing care started 35 years ago as a bedside nurse in the Intensive Care Unit in a large teaching hospital. These years laid the foundation and sparked her interest in, and commitment to, quality improvement and healthcare compliance. In her 20 years working for Advanced Home Care, she looked for opportunities to improve the care and service Advanced Home Care provided while leading teams to improve the overall Patient Experience. She also implemented the Just Culture, which believes that human beings are prone to error; systems should be created to minimize the risk for error to ensure patient safety and minimize risk. Merrill has also served as a mentor for the Women’s Resource Center, which supports women who are experiencing a variety of challenges and promotes self-reliance and connection to community resources. She lists her greatest accomplishment as raising her two “incredibly smart, kind, and caring daughters”.
Alexis Williams is the Executive Director of Caregiver Connect, Inc. Caregiver Connect, Inc.’s mission is to serve family caregivers by providing educational opportunities, Encounter support groups, and supportive caregiver navigation. Her previous experiences as a senior advocate, social worker, Respite Care Director, placement specialist, and Care Manager are great building blocks to the mission of Caregiver Connect, Inc. She is a graduate of Georgia State University with a bachelor’s degree in Mental Health & Human Services and has an undergraduate Certificate in Gerontology. She is a Certified Senior Advisor. When not at work, Alexis is usually trying to keep up with her husband, John and their three children, Jackson, Avery, Charlotte and Max- their dog .
Meet Our Moderator
Risa Hanau, LCSW is the Clinical and Community Educator at AuthoraCare Collective. Risa is a seasoned presenter and teacher in the area of end-of-life and ethics. She is a member of the Cone Health Ethics Committee. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker by training and holds a Master of Social Work from The University of Pennsylvania.
