The Power of Knowing | Healing Hearts

Many are dealing with “our hearts hurting” due to the loss and grief that has been experienced over the past year. Because of the length of the pandemic and the ongoing losses, it has been difficult for many adults and children to grieve and to memorialize our loved ones in the way we are used to. We will talk about how to understand what we are experiencing and what we can do about it.

Learning Objectives

•  Define prolonged and ongoing grief and loss in the setting COVID-19 for adults and children.
• Learn about the impact of ongoing and unresolved grief.
• Learn about ways to address grief for adults and children, including ways to hold meaningful services of remembrance during this time.

Meet Our Panelists

Laura Fuller, LCMHCS, is a long-time Kids Path Counselor and has been the Program Coordinator on the Greensboro campus since 2017. She is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor-Supervisor and holds a Master of Education in Counseling from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Laura is passionate about helping children and teenagers cope with the illness or death of a loved one and is herself the mother of two young children.

Hillary Irusta, MDiv, BCCC, is a Chaplain at AuthoraCare Collective where she has worked in hospice care for the past five years in home and long-term care settings. Hillary provides care and counseling to people coping with unique spiritual and religious needs in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. An ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, and board-certified through the College of Pastoral Supervision and Psychotherapy, Hillary holds degrees from Montreat College (BA) and Wake Forest University School of Divinity (MDiv).

Ryan Mahler, NCC, LPC, has worked at AuthoraCare for 12 years as a bereavement counselor and, more recently, as the Adult Grief Support and Counseling Manager. She counsels individual clients, facilitates support groups and conducts workshops, all with the goal of helping people adjust to life after a loss in addition to building connection and validation throughout the process.

Meet Our Moderator

 

Risa Hanau, LCSW is the Director of Education at AuthoraCare Collective. Risa is a seasoned presenter and teacher in the area of end-of-life and ethics. She is a member of the Cone Health Ethics Committee. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker by training and holds a Master of Social Work from The University of Pennsylvania.
